Direct answer

Select a packaging sample by the question it must answer. A digital proof checks content and layout; a mockup checks visual organization; a plain structural sample checks size, fit, opening, and assembly; a material or printed sample checks selected appearance and feel; and a production or line trial checks defined manufacturing and performance risks. No single sample proves every requirement.

Define the approval question first

Write down what must be learned before choosing a sample method: product fit, usable volume, shelf stance, opening, zipper or fitment placement, container-to-carton fit, assembly, artwork orientation, material appearance, color, finish, filling-line compatibility, seals, leaks, or distribution performance.

A presentation sample made for a buyer meeting should not be treated as evidence of food contact, barrier, compatibility, seal integrity, shelf life, or production-line performance unless it was specifically produced and tested for those questions.

Match common proof and sample types to their limits

A digital PDF proof supports copy, layout, orientation, and stated separation checks. A white or plain mockup supports geometry and sequence. A product-fit sample supports dimensions, fill, headspace, opening, and shelf behavior. A material sample supports appearance and touch but may not represent the finished package construction.

A printed prototype can support graphics and three-dimensional presentation, while a press or production reference may better represent the selected process. Ask whether material, ink, finish, lamination, converting, tooling, and equipment match the planned production job.

Build performance testing separately

Depending on risk, validation may require compatibility aging, barrier or shelf-life work, seal strength, leak testing, zipper cycles, spout-weld or cap checks, drops, vibration, compression, temperature exposure, print rub, barcode verification, or filling-line trials.

Define sample count, conditioning, test method, acceptance criteria, responsibilities, and what happens after a failure. A sample only becomes useful evidence when the method and decision rule are clear.

Control cost, timing, and approval records

Sample pricing and timing vary by format, size, material, print, finish, tooling, SKU count, quantity, shipping, and purpose. Confirm when timing begins and what approvals or files are required before work starts.

Retain the sample description, dieline and artwork revisions, material or process represented, limitations, approver, approval date, exceptions, and next action. This prevents a visual approval from being mistaken for technical production release.
