Name the handling problem the handle should solve
A pet-food brand might want an easier way to lift a bag from a retail shelf, carry it home or move an opened bag to a feeding area. These uses are not interchangeable. Decide which action matters before adding a feature to the artwork or requesting a price.
Keep the product, fill weight and intended channel fixed for the first comparison. The purchase question is whether a proposed handle configuration offers a useful, supportable change for that bag—not whether all pet-food packs should have handles. P&M can review functional options when technically appropriate; availability depends on the specific format and construction.
Compare the current and proposed bag side by side
| Decision point | What to compare at unchanged fill weight | What needs confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Grip access | Can the intended user reach and grip the proposed handle on a filled bag? | Proposed opening, placement and usable space |
| Carrying | How is the bag held and moved in the intended use? | Engineering assessment and relevant evaluation plan |
| First opening | Does the handle location interfere with the tear or cut route? | Approved opening layout |
| Reclosure | Can the zipper be reached and closed after opening? | Actual opened-bag configuration |
| Print space | What moves when handle space is reserved? | Revised artwork and required readable information |
| Order cost | What changes beyond the feature price? | Material, converting, proof, sampling and setup terms |
Use filled samples to review access and layout, while distinguishing a visual or handling mockup from a production-representative performance sample. A mockup can reveal that fingers cannot reach the intended opening; it cannot establish a safe carrying load. Ask the supplier what the proposed sample can and cannot demonstrate.
Do not carry an old approval across a new structure
The supplier should identify the proposed handle construction, its location relative to seals and opening features, and any associated material or converting changes. The buyer should ask what evidence applies to that complete version. A result for an unhandled bag, a different handle or a different construction is not automatically transferable.
Agree the evaluation with the responsible engineering or test provider, including the product, fill condition, handling scenario and acceptance criteria. This article does not prescribe a lifting load, duration, repetition count or safety threshold. Those conditions need to match the actual product and intended use.
If the intended use includes carrying the bag after opening, specify that separately. Opening may leave a different layout from the sealed retail pack. Do not assume the remaining handle, zipper or top area supports the same use simply because the product originally had the same net weight.
Choose between a handle revision and keeping the current bag
A handle should earn its place through a defined use and an acceptable complete proposal. Compare the added specification and cost with any observed improvement in the intended handling task. If the proposed placement conflicts with opening, required information or the usable grip area, revise the configuration before treating it as an approved option.
If the decision is to keep the current bag, document that conclusion and its reason. A feature rejected during sample review can be a useful procurement result. It avoids ordering a more complex configuration merely because it appears on another supplier's catalog.
If the handle is accepted, identify the new drawing revision and the evidence supporting it. Keep the current bag and proposed revision distinct in the quote and approval record; unchanged fill weight is not an adequate version identifier.
Send a handle-specific request to P&M
Start from pet food and treat packaging. Provide the product form, fill weight, current bag dimensions and construction, closure, intended carrying action, quantity per design and destination. Include a marked drawing showing the proposed handle area and the opening route.
Request a project review to confirm whether the configuration is feasible, what sample is appropriate, and which costs and timing depend on the revision. Do not approve production from a catalog image or from an unsupported claim that the existing bag can simply be given a handle.
General educational information only. Materials, performance, compliance, claims, quantities, and timing require confirmation for the exact packaging project.
