Separate regulatory approval from print preparation
An artwork team needs a clear input before it can plan a new nutrition panel: which approved label version is being implemented, for which products and markets. Keep that decision with the brand’s responsible regulatory reviewer. The packaging supplier can work from approved copy and dimensions without being presented as the authority approving the label.
AAFCO’s Pet Food Label Modernization overview describes changes involving nutrition information, intended use, ingredients, and handling or storage presentation. It also says states have their own adoption processes. The page includes historical 2023 implementation language; it should not be used as a current state-by-state adoption tracker or a universal print deadline.
Plan the space before shrinking the artwork
Place the approved elements on the actual front, back and gusset panels. Identify where the filled pouch folds and where seals, zipper features or cuts limit usable space. A new information panel can change the layout of surrounding copy; simply scaling the previous artwork down can hide a problem until a physical proof is reviewed.
Ask the label owner to approve any required wording or presentation change. Keep numeric nutrition information, ingredient wording and intended-use text tied to the supplied approved file. A designer’s placeholder panel is useful for layout exploration only when it is unmistakably marked as a placeholder and excluded from the print release.
Keep one cutover record per SKU
Use this original production-planning aid to connect the approved label to the order. It does not establish legal requirements or authorize disposal or sale of old packaging.
| Field | Decision to record | Owner to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| SKU and pack size | Product, fill size and artwork identifier | Brand operations |
| Market and label version | Approved wording and applicability reference | Responsible label reviewer |
| Panel allocation | Space for approved nutrition and intended-use elements | Artwork and label reviewers |
| Physical layout | Fold, seal, zipper and trim conflicts resolved | Packaging/artwork team |
| Existing inventory | Brand-approved handling of remaining printed stock | Brand operations and label reviewer |
| Print cutover | Order or lot using the new revision | Procurement |
| Final release | Full-size proof, approver and date | Authorized artwork owner |
Review the smallest pack and the real proof
Start layout checks with the SKUs most likely to have limited printable space. Do not assume approval of a large pouch covers a smaller size or a different gusset arrangement. Record whether the proof is a layout view, a printed sample or the actual approved production artwork; those records answer different questions.
A hypothetical brand may update a larger dog-food pouch first while a smaller treat pouch needs a different arrangement. Keeping two explicit revision records is safer than calling the whole artwork family “updated.” The brand should determine each product’s applicable label and inventory plan before procurement schedules the reprint.
For readability after handling, use a separate print-scuff acceptance review. That checks a different question from allocating space and controlling the approved version. A clean digital layout alone does not demonstrate the durability of the printed pack.
Supply approved inputs for the pouch quote
For pet-food and treat packaging, share approved copy, the current dieline, pack dimensions, material requirements, quantity per SKU and proposed artwork cutover. Identify open review items before confirming a production schedule.
P&M can discuss the packaging and artwork inputs for a quotation. Market applicability, nutrition statements and label compliance remain decisions for the brand’s qualified reviewers. Keep their approved files alongside the supplier proof so later reorders preserve the correct version.
