Start with the final container and label panel

Provide production-representative containers plus the surface material, coating, texture, curvature, diameter, squeeze behavior, filled weight, dimensional tolerances, and the exact area available for the label. Glass, metal, paperboard, PET, HDPE, LDPE, and polypropylene surfaces do not create the same adhesion conditions.

Identify seams, mold lines, ribs, recesses, compound curves, handles, dispensing areas, and places where consumers grip or squeeze the package. Confirm the label dimensions with applied samples before artwork release.

Choose the face stock by appearance and performance

Paper labels can suit many dry retail applications and offer coated, uncoated, textured, or specialty appearances. Film labels add moisture resistance and can be selected for clear, white, metallized, conformable, squeezable, or durable applications.

The face stock must remain compatible with printing, white ink, varnish or laminate, foil or other finish, die cutting, dispensing, adhesive, container movement, storage, and end use. Material names alone do not establish suitability.

Match the adhesive to application and service conditions

Record the temperature when the label is applied and the temperatures it will experience afterward. Refrigeration, freezing, condensation, wet filling, oils, chemicals, low-surface-energy plastics, recycled content, texture, squeezing, and long storage can change adhesive performance.

Permanent, removable, repositionable, freezer, wash-off, high-tack, and specialty pathways each need a defined use case. Test on representative containers because surface treatment, contamination, release agents, and supplier changes can affect adhesion.

Define liner, die cut, and roll configuration

The release liner supports printing, die cutting, matrix removal, rewinding, storage, and dispensing. Liner type and thickness must suit the selected label construction and application method.

For automatic application, document label width and length, gap, corner radius or custom shape, copy direction, leading edge, number across, web width, core size, maximum roll outside diameter, unwind direction, splice rules, and labels per roll. Share the applicator make and model when available.

Plan printing, finishes, codes, and version control

Specify process and spot colors, white ink, opacity, clear areas, matte or gloss, laminate or varnish, metallic effects, foil, tactile or selective effects, barcodes, lot or date coding zones, and variable-data requirements. Confirm what the selected proof can demonstrate on the actual face stock.

List every size and artwork separately. Control the approved dieline, copy, barcode, color reference, finish layers, variable fields, roll direction, proof, revision, quantity, and release owner for each SKU.

Validate applied-label performance before production

Apply representative labels to clean production containers using the intended method and temperature. Check initial tack and again after appropriate dwell, conditioning, storage, and distribution exposure.

Evaluation may include edge lift, flagging, bubbles, wrinkling, label growth or shrinkage, squeeze recovery, condensation, freezer exposure, abrasion, product contact, barcode readability, dispensing, removal, and residue. Define acceptance criteria and retain approved references.
