Ask which question the evidence is answering
A valve inspection request is easier to answer when it names the concern. Is the valve missing, located incorrectly, poorly attached or failing to perform as specified? A single photograph labeled valve checked does not distinguish these possibilities. Start by separating what can be seen from what must be measured or tested.
The framework below concerns degassing valves on coffee packaging. It is not a specification for an espresso-machine valve, and it does not prescribe one pressure limit for every coffee pouch.
| Evidence layer | What to request | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Visible condition | Identified sample photos showing presence, position and visible condition | Opening pressure, flow or backflow performance |
| Installation integrity | Agreed checks of the valve attachment and sealing area, with observations | The function of an untested valve model or lot |
| One-way function | Model-specific test method, results and acceptance criteria | Performance of every unit without the matching inspection coverage |
Use photos to document visible condition
For the photographed sample, show the valve's position relative to the drawing, the surrounding area and any visible damage. Include a sample or lot identifier. If orientation or internal details matter, request the appropriate view rather than concluding that an unseen feature is correct.
Visible missing valves, position errors, damage and seal appearance are suitable for online inspection. A buyer should still confirm which checks are included in the actual inspection plan. A photo of one pouch is not evidence that the whole order received full inspection.
Keep attachment checks separate from valve function
When a leak is observed, record where it appears: the valve body, punched opening, attachment ring, another pouch seal or an area not yet localized. Do not assign a root cause solely from the location of a stain or from the assumption that any leaking coffee bag has a defective valve. Attachment or retention checks need the agreed method and sample identity.
For a functional assessment, the selected plan may examine opening, exhaust, reclosing as pressure falls and resistance to backflow. Pressure and flow limits must come from the selected valve specification or customer-approved project standard. P&M's functional measurements are normally first-piece or lot-sample checks unless a different inspection plan is agreed. The seal integrity guide addresses the separate finished-pouch evidence.
As an equipment example, AMETEK MOCON describes a coffee testing sequence involving headspace analysis, package leak testing and a separate valve-function check, with stored results and timestamps. This illustrates distinct evidence types; it is not a claim that P&M owns that instrument or that its sequence is mandatory for every project.
Request results with enough context to review them
Use this record when requesting a report or clarifying a result. If the method or acceptance basis is missing, ask for it before treating a numerical reading as a pass.
| Report field | Useful detail | Question it resolves |
|---|---|---|
| Package identity | Valve model, film or pouch revision, sample and lot IDs | Does this result match the package offered? |
| Method and conditions | Procedure, equipment identification and relevant test conditions | How was the reading obtained? |
| Result and criterion | Measured value or observation, units and criterion source | What supports the disposition? |
| Coverage and decision | Samples checked, date, reviewer, exceptions and follow-up | Which units and decisions does this evidence cover? |
Revisit the plan when the coffee or package changes
Whole-bean and ground-coffee projects should not silently share the same assumptions. Ground coffee introduces the question of powder entering or blocking the valve; a filtered valve can be evaluated for that use rather than assuming the whole-bean choice transfers unchanged. A valve-model, film or installation change also needs a review of the applicable evidence.
For a P&M coffee bag inquiry, send whether the contents are whole bean or ground, the pouch revision, selected valve specification if available, and the concern you need resolved. If the question is about shelf life, include the intended storage conditions and required validation scope. A valve photo or short functional check does not create a shelf-life guarantee.
