Plan flexible packaging printing by defining the final film structure, print side, reverse- or surface-print path, white-ink strategy, transparent or metallic areas, CMYK and spot-color builds, approved color references, finishes, print process, proof limitations, tolerances, and production control before artwork release. A Pantone number or monitor image does not guarantee the same appearance on clear film, white film, kraft paper, metallized film, matte material, or a laminated pouch. Color approval must identify the substrate, backing, ink system, measurement conditions, visual standard, and acceptable production variation.
Flexible packaging printing begins with the final structure
Custom printed flexible packaging can use digital, flexographic, rotogravure or another approved web-printing route, but the artwork cannot be separated from the substrate and laminate. Film type, surface treatment, transparency, metallization, paper facing, print side, adhesive, lamination, coating, sealing and converting determine how ink is applied and protected.
Confirm the layer order and whether the printed web will be viewed directly or through a clear outer film. A proof produced on white paper cannot by itself predict the color, opacity, gloss, depth or metallic interaction of the finished pouch.
Reverse printing vs. surface printing
Reverse printing places the image on the inside face of a transparent outer web so the artwork is viewed through the film after lamination. The outer film protects the ink from much of the direct rubbing and handling exposure. Artwork orientation, white-ink order, adhesive appearance, film clarity and lamination all affect the final result.
Surface printing places ink on the outside surface of the package or web. It may be appropriate for selected films, papers, labels, coatings or production routes, but the exposed ink and varnish system must meet the required adhesion, rub, scuff, chemical, heat, freeze and distribution conditions. Reverse and surface print files can require different ink sequences and technical setups.
What does white ink do on flexible packaging?
White ink creates opacity and a controlled background on clear or metallized substrates. A flood white can support a broad opaque field; selective white ink can sit behind logos, text, images or color areas while leaving clear windows or metallic effects unprinted. Multiple white applications or specialty opaque systems may be considered when the approved print route and substrate support them.
White-ink coverage, opacity, pinholes, trapping, registration and tone affect every color printed with it. White should be supplied as a named production layer or spot swatch according to the printer's specification—not simulated only with a white object that disappears in ordinary artwork viewing.

Printing on clear, white, metallized, and kraft materials
Clear film allows transparent windows and effects but needs deliberate white-ink placement to control opacity and legibility. White film supplies a more uniform starting background, though film tone and gloss still influence color. Metallized film can create metallic color effects where white ink is omitted or reduced, while opaque white can block the metal appearance in selected areas.
Natural kraft paper and paper-faced laminates introduce a warm, variable surface color and texture. White ink or a white layer may improve selected graphics, but ink holdout, paper shade, fiber, coating, gloss and lamination change reproduction. Approve colors on the intended material rather than treating all substrates as a white-paper reference.
CMYK process color vs. spot-color printing
CMYK process printing builds images and colors from cyan, magenta, yellow and black screens or digital separations. It supports photographs, gradients and many multi-color graphics, but not every brand color falls inside the achievable gamut of a specific press, ink set and substrate.
Spot-color printing uses a separately prepared ink or controlled channel for a named color target. It can improve consistency or gamut for selected brand colors, but adds production, plate or cylinder, setup and control considerations. Expanded-gamut systems may use additional fixed process colors. The approved print provider should define how each artwork color will be reproduced.
Use Pantone references correctly
A Pantone reference is a communication target, not a guarantee that one ink formula will look identical on every flexible packaging material. Coated-paper books, uncoated references, plastic standards, digital libraries and physical drawdowns can represent different viewing conditions and expectations.
Record the reference system and edition, physical standard where available, substrate, white backing or metallic interaction, finish, light source and visual approval method. If an exact target is outside the achievable gamut or changes materially on the approved film, document the agreed production aim before plates, cylinders or final files are released.
Color measurement and Delta E tolerances
A spectrophotometer can compare measured color to a target and report a color-difference value such as Delta E. The number is meaningful only when the color space and formula, illuminant, observer, instrument geometry, aperture, backing, measurement mode, substrate, opacity and sample condition are controlled.
There is no universal Delta E limit for every brand, color, material or print process. Establish job-specific visual and numerical acceptance criteria with the printer, identify which colors are critical, define averaging and sample locations, and state how transparent, metallic, fluorescent, textured or low-opacity areas will be evaluated.
Registration, trapping, overprint, and small graphics
Flexible webs stretch, tension, track and register through printing, lamination and converting. Fine reverses, small type, thin rules, borders, multi-color knockouts and white underprints should be designed within the approved process tolerances. Trapping can reduce visible gaps where adjacent colors or white ink move slightly relative to each other.
Overprint and knockout settings must be intentional. Rich black, fine black text, gradients, transparency effects, barcodes and variable coding areas need prepress review. Barcode data, size, quiet zones, orientation, contrast and placement should be checked on the final substrate and package geometry.
Proofs do not all prove the same thing
A PDF or soft proof is useful for content, layout, dimensions and separations but depends on the display and viewing setup. A calibrated contract proof can better simulate defined color conditions while still differing from transparent film, white ink, metallic substrate, reverse printing, lamination and finish.
A material mockup, ink drawdown, digital printed sample or production press proof can answer different questions. Every approval should state whether it covers copy, color target, white ink, substrate, opacity, window, metallic effect, finish, dimensions or production behavior—and what remains unproven.

Matte, gloss, soft touch, and lamination change color appearance
Matte films and varnishes can reduce reflected gloss and make dark colors appear visually different from a gloss sample. Soft-touch surfaces add tactile and optical effects. Lamination changes the viewing path through film, adhesive and ink, while metallized layers and clear windows create different backgrounds inside the same design.
Approve color and finish as one surface system. If a brand family uses gloss, matte, paper and metallic packages, define whether the goal is a shared measured target, a visual family match or separate substrate-specific standards.
Control colors across SKUs, reorders, and print methods
Record the approved artwork revision, substrate, structure, ink sequence, white-ink coverage, color targets, profiles or separations, proof, press standard, finish and reference sample for every SKU. Similar-looking files with different spot-color names or white layers can create avoidable setup and reorder errors.
Digital, flexographic and gravure production can reproduce color through different screening, ink, plate or cylinder and process conditions. A program that moves between methods should use a documented cross-process color strategy and realistic tolerances rather than assuming identical output from the same file.
Production color-control plan
A useful control plan identifies critical colors and areas, the approved standard, substrate and backing, measurement and visual conditions, startup approval, sampling frequency, tolerances, reaction plan, retained samples and change control. It should also define how white opacity, registration, density, defects, gloss and finish are evaluated.
Color data alone does not replace visual review of the complete package. Compare representative finished material under controlled lighting and include lamination, curing, slitting, bag making and storage effects where they can change appearance.
Flexible packaging printing RFQ checklist
A useful printing request includes the package and order plan as well as the artwork. Unknown production decisions can be marked for prepress review instead of encoded incorrectly in the file.
Provide the pouch or rollstock format, final structure and substrate, print side, dimensions or web specification, quantity by size and artwork, number of SKUs, colors and physical references, CMYK and spot-color expectations, white-ink and clear-window plan, metallic areas, matte or gloss finish, barcode and coding needs, current editable artwork, proof requirements, reorder strategy, delivery destination and target date.
