Compare two complete buying routes
A labeled plain pouch separates the packaging purchase from the artwork-bearing label and its application. A custom-printed pouch combines more of that work in the pouch order. For a brand choosing its launch route, the useful comparison is the total needed to deliver the required number of usable packs—not just the price of one empty bag.
Start with the same product, target quantity, pouch dimensions, construction, closure and required arrival date. If the plain option has a different barrier structure or size, it is a separate packaging proposal. Do not treat its price as a direct printing-cost comparison until the functional differences are accepted.
Ask whether the exact plain pouch is available, how it is sold, where it ships from and what the replenishment conditions are. A general stock offer does not establish inventory of a particular kraft construction. Confirm the custom route's minimum and setup conditions independently.
Put every cost in the same launch worksheet
| Cost or commitment | Plain pouch plus label | Custom-printed pouch |
|---|---|---|
| Packaging quantity | Actual orderable pouch quantity and any case rounding | Quantity by approved artwork and specification |
| Decoration | Label print, material and orderable quantity | Quoted print, proof and relevant setup/tooling |
| Application | Who applies labels; labor or service charge | Any separate labeling still required |
| Usable output | Agreed allowance for setup, rejects and rework | Agreed allowance for the quoted production route |
| Delivery | Pouch and label freight; transfer to the applicator if needed | Finished-pouch delivery and any separate components |
| Remaining inventory | Plain pouches and artwork-specific labels tracked separately | Remaining pouches tied to their printed artwork |
For a planning comparison, add the attributable purchase, setup, application, rework and delivery costs for each route. Divide by the usable quantity expected for the launch, using an explicitly agreed allowance. Keep recoverable or reusable inventory visible rather than automatically treating every leftover item as scrap. The worksheet is an original buying tool, not a supplier price list.
An illustrative quantity mismatch: a launch needs 2,400 decorated packs, but a confirmed plain-pouch offer is sold in cases of 1,000. Three cases supply 3,000 pouches. If labels are ordered in a different quantity, there are two inventory balances to manage. These example quantities do not describe P&M's stock sizes or minimums.
Prove that the label works on the actual pouch
Paper color and texture do not tell you whether a particular label adhesive is suitable. Avery's adhesion troubleshooting guidance identifies surface compatibility, contamination and environmental exposure among factors that can affect adhesion. Confirm the label supplier's recommendations for the actual outer surface and use conditions.
Use the proposed pouch and label together before finalizing the decorated layout. Check the intended flat application area, visibility on the filled pouch, edge lifting, handling and interference with folds, the zipper or opening features. Keep food-contact suitability and product protection as separate construction requirements; an external label does not qualify the pouch for its contents.
Name the party responsible for application and rejected labels. A workable sample applied carefully by hand does not establish the speed, alignment or yield of a production labeling operation.
Choose the route that matches how the artwork will change
A shared plain pouch can leave SKU-specific information on separate labels, provided the approved construction and size suit each product. That may reduce the number of pouch artworks held, but it also creates label-version and application controls. Custom printing can remove some application work while tying more inventory to a specific design. Compare these tradeoffs using the brand's actual revision and reorder pattern.
The label-versus-print decision comes before choosing how a custom kraft design is printed. For that separate question, see direct printing on kraft versus film-printed laminate.
Ask for a quotation with the missing costs visible
For P&M kraft paper pouches, provide the product, construction or protection requirements, pouch dimensions, quantity per design, closure, artwork status and destination. Identify whether you are comparing an actually available plain option with custom production or only exploring two possible routes.
Request a packaging review and ask for the proposed print route, sample purpose and fees, setup or tooling, production conditions and shipping terms to be stated separately. Decide from the complete launch plan, not an assumed universal break-even quantity.
