Direct answer

For a shrink sleeve label, fix the seam and critical artwork only after the proposed sleeve is evaluated on the final container with the intended application method. Map the seam, folds, high-distortion areas, readable information and barcode on one approved template. A flat artwork proof cannot establish the final applied appearance or scan performance.

Assign one container and one application route

Record the final bottle or other qualified rigid container, closure, dimensions and tolerances, intended coverage, orientation features and any area that must remain exposed. Then identify who applies the sleeve and what equipment or sample method will be used. A drawing of a similar bottle is not the approved container.

P&M can receive and quote [custom shrink sleeve label projects](/labels-shrink-sleeves/shrink-sleeve-labels). The quote must confirm the offered film, dimensions, seam, supply format and approval scope for this project. This guide does not claim P&M supplies the container, applies the sleeve on the buyer's production line or manufactures every sleeve at its owned factory.

Place the seam before locking the visual hierarchy

PDC's designer guidance for shrink sleeves explains that seaming and print-to-fold tolerances can affect orientation on non-round bottles, and that a test on the actual container and tunnel can reveal distortion. This is supplier guidance, not a universal P&M tolerance or a promise that one seam position fits every container.

On the supplier-issued template, mark front presentation, seam, high-change shoulders or tapers, closure clearance, copy, barcode and any transparent area. Keep required text and codes out of zones that the applied sample shows are unreliable. Ask the brand, responsible supplier and applicator to resolve the revised layout together; an artwork operator should not guess a new seam allowance.

Review barcode and readable copy on the applied sample

The current GS1 General Specifications include placement rules for barcodes on curved surfaces. The correct symbol, size, orientation and verification method depend on the trade item and intended scan setting. A readable screen proof is not a barcode verification result, and this article does not claim that a chosen layout complies with GS1.

An applied sample is evidence for an identified combination, not a reusable sign-off for every artwork or bottle. Use this change map to send the right question back to the responsible owner before print release.

Keep the release record narrower than a generic RFQ

The [general shrink sleeve label specification guide](/knowledge-center/shrink-sleeve-label-specification-guide) lists the full RFQ and approval scope. This article addresses one narrower failure point: the handoff between seam position, artwork and evidence from a sleeve applied to the final container. Record the container and closure revision, sleeve and artwork revision, applicator, inspection method, barcode owner, acceptance criteria and open exceptions on one sheet.

Send P&M the container drawing or physical sample, desired coverage, artwork status, application details, quantities by design and the specific seam or readability issue. Ask for the project-specific template and sample plan before approving print. Do not infer shrink ratio, film gauge, line speed, tamper evidence or recyclability from this article.
