Define the decision behind the oxygen number
A coffee brand and its packing partner should identify whether the trial concerns the initial packing process, a change during storage or a specific package problem. Those questions need a defined sampling plan. A result without the measurement time and sample identity is difficult to compare with a later batch.
Record whether the product is whole bean or ground, the relevant roast and packing references, fill quantity, bag size and construction, valve revision where present, and the actual filling and sealing setup. State whether gas flushing is part of the trial. Do not infer that a bag supplier also provides or controls that process.
Confirm that the method fits the package
ASTM F2714-08(2021) describes fluorescent-decay measurement of sealed-package headspace oxygen. It requires an internal coated component and a suitable transparent or translucent optical path. It is not a method that can simply be applied through every opaque coffee bag. The responsible laboratory must confirm the setup and applicability before the trial.
Other headspace approaches take a gas sample. Ask the laboratory or instrument specialist which method suits the available headspace and package, how sampling affects the unit, and whether later readings use the same bag or separate samples. Record the answer rather than assuming all methods produce interchangeable observations.
Build a sample-level handoff sheet
This is a suggested procurement and trial record, not a laboratory procedure. Agree the sampling schedule, equipment checks, criteria and responsible party before results are collected.
| Field | What to record | Why the buyer needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Trial question | Initial packing, storage change or a defined investigation | Keeps the result tied to a decision |
| Product and package | Coffee lot/reference, fill, bag/valve revision and sample ID | Prevents results from different systems being pooled |
| Packing conditions | Packing date/time, relevant line settings and flushing status | Identifies the process actually used |
| Measurement | Method, equipment reference, sample handling and time after sealing | Makes comparisons interpretable |
| Results and criteria | Reported oxygen value/unit, agreed limit and any invalid result | Separates acceptance from missing or unusable data |
| Supporting evidence | Separate leak, valve or shelf-life report references as required | Avoids asking one measurement to answer every question |
| Decision | Reviewer, scope approved, unresolved question and next action | Creates a usable production handoff |
Interpret a change without jumping to a cause
If results differ, first compare the sample identities, measurement times and methods. Then ask the technical team which additional evidence can distinguish the possible explanations. A high or changing headspace value is not, by itself, a located leak or a failed valve.
ASTM F2714 notes that using headspace change to study permeability generally concerns empty package systems because contents can consume or release gases. Do not convert changing readings from filled coffee bags directly into a film OTR claim. See the separate barrier-material guide for that specification question.
Keep headspace, leak and valve checks distinct
AMETEK MOCON’s coffee testing overview treats headspace analysis, leak testing and degassing-valve performance as separate testing questions. Use the checks required by your trial plan; one passing result does not automatically clear the others.
There is no universal oxygen acceptance percentage supplied by this guide. Your responsible coffee and quality team should set criteria for the product and process, supported by the required validation. A target copied from another brand or instrument advertisement is not an approved requirement for your coffee.
Send the trial requirements with the bag specification
For a custom coffee bag project, send P&M the coffee type, fill quantity, format, dimensions, quantity per SKU, valve requirements and trial evidence requested by your packing partner. Confirm which package samples and records P&M will supply and which measurements the co-packer or laboratory will perform. Keep the approved trial scope with the final bag specification.
