There are two different plastic-free paper bag problems
A garment bag needs to keep a clean, lightweight product together, protect its surface, show branding, and move through packing and fulfillment. A coffee bag must also control oxygen, moisture, aroma, seals, filling, storage, degassing, and a defined quality period. Using the same paper bag for both applications creates avoidable failure.
P&M separates the project into two routes. Heat-sealable glassine paper bags serve lightweight products without a demanding shelf-life barrier. High-barrier coated kraft paper bags serve selected dry foods only after the complete coating, seal, food-contact, filling, and shelf-life system has been validated.
What is a glassine bag?
Glassine is a smooth, translucent, highly calendered paper with a dense fiber surface. It can provide a premium semi-transparent presentation without using a clear plastic film, allowing the product silhouette, color, or barcode area to remain partly visible. Basis weight, paper grade, fiber source, translucency, tensile strength, tear resistance, folding behavior, and humidity response must match the bag size and packed item.
Standard glassine is not automatically heat-sealable. A dedicated bag-making line can apply or activate a compatible heat-seal coating or heat-activated adhesive at the required seams and closure areas. To support a plastic-free claim, the exact paper, coating, seam adhesive, release material, inks, varnish, label, and any closure must be documented as one finished bag.

Best applications for heat-sealable glassine paper bags
Glassine bags are well suited to lightweight, dry, non-sharp products that mainly need organization, surface protection, branding, and fulfillment convenience. Typical projects include folded garments, underwear, socks, scarves, textiles, accessories, stationery, cards, small craft items, instruction packs, and presentation components.
The bag should still be tested around the actual item. Product corners, zippers, buttons, hardware, weight, static, rubbing, warehouse humidity, ecommerce handling, barcode scanning, venting, opening, resealing if required, and consumer disposal instructions can change the paper grade, dimensions, seams, and closure.
Why ordinary glassine is not a coffee or long-shelf-life food bag
Glassine can resist grease better than ordinary porous paper, but it does not by itself provide the controlled oxygen and moisture barrier or hermetic heat-seal system required by many shelf-life-sensitive foods. A bag that looks closed can still allow oxygen, water vapor, and aroma to move through the paper or seams.
Do not use an ordinary glassine garment-style bag for coffee beans, tea, powders, snacks, pet treats, or another product solely because it is dry. The product's oils, aroma, initial moisture, oxygen sensitivity, target shelf life, packing conditions, storage, and distribution determine whether a functional barrier paper is required.
High-barrier kraft paper bags for coffee and shelf-life-sensitive foods
For a product such as coffee beans, one possible plastic-free paper pathway uses kraft paper for structure and printing, a high-barrier NK functional layer for oxygen, moisture, or aroma protection, and a heat-sealable NK layer for package closure. The final layer order, coat weights, paper grade, barrier values, seal range, product-contact status, and converting method must be defined on the approved specification.
“NK” is treated here as a project- or supplier-specific coating designation, not a universal industry resin code. Before P&M recommends or prints the structure, the technical file should identify what each NK layer is made from, what function it performs, whether it contains intentionally added conventional plastic, which food types and conditions of use it supports, and which barrier and seal data apply to the finished construction.

Coffee adds aroma, oil, oxygen, moisture, and degassing requirements
Coffee is not protected by paper appearance alone. Define whole bean or ground coffee, roast level, time from roasting to packing, fill weight, bulk density, headspace, oxygen and moisture targets, aroma retention, oils, desired quality period, storage temperature and humidity, distribution, and consumer use after opening.
Freshly roasted coffee may release gas. An ordinary plastic one-way valve would become part of the finished package and can change a plastic-free claim. If a valve is not used, the roast-to-pack schedule, gas behavior, headspace, seals, bag strength, and pack-out must be validated. If a valve or vent component is proposed, its exact material and evidence must be included in both performance and claim review.

Plastic-free paper packaging does not have to be limited to simple black text or one-color logos. P&M can develop custom printed glassine bags and kraft paper bags with CMYK artwork, photographic or illustrated graphics, brand colors, product information, barcodes, variable areas, and multi-SKU systems, subject to the paper, print route, order quantity, and approved artwork.
Glassine is translucent, so the product and anything behind the bag influence color appearance. Natural kraft has a warm brown fiber tone, while white kraft provides a brighter print base. Prepress should control color builds, trapping, white or opaque support where the approved system allows it, fine type, barcode contrast, registration, ink coverage, rub resistance, and the proof's limitations on the actual paper.
Foil stamping and selective UV can create a premium paper package
P&M can review hot foil stamping for metallic logos, borders, icons, or small highlight areas and selective UV for gloss contrast or tactile emphasis on compatible glassine and kraft structures. Artwork must keep these effects away from heat-seal zones, folds, gussets, tear paths, barcodes, and areas where cracking, rubbing, or registration movement would be visible.
Foil transfer layers, primers, adhesives, and UV-cured varnishes are part of the finished package. Availability does not automatically mean that every foil or UV system supports a plastic-free, recyclable, compostable, or food-contact claim. When plastic-free positioning is required, P&M reviews the exact decoration system and supplier declarations before the claim is approved; a simpler ink-only design may be the cleaner evidence path.

Food-contact review includes paper, coatings, inks, and adhesives
FDA describes packaging paper, coatings, adhesives, and colorants as food-contact substances when they are used in a food-contact article. The regulatory status and documentation must match the exact substance, food type, temperature, duration, and conditions of use. A general “food-grade paper” statement does not approve the complete printed and converted bag.
For coffee or another food, identify which surface contacts the product, possible setoff or migration paths, inks and varnishes, barrier and seal coatings, seam adhesive, storage duration, fill temperature, and any fatty or oily contact. The responsible food company approves the final packaging and shelf-life system for the intended U.S. market.
How to validate a glassine garment bag
A useful development trial uses the actual garment or product and the intended packing method. Confirm usable dimensions, loading access, seam strength, closure, paper tearing, sharp hardware, product visibility, barcode scanning, ventilation, print rub, folding, case compression, drops, humidity exposure, unpacking, and consumer opening.
If the bags run automatically, provide the machine make and model, reel or bag format, web width, speed, seal temperature, pressure, dwell time, registration, sensors, perforation or venting, and roll or stack requirements. A coating that seals in a hand test may not provide a stable production window on the dedicated bag-making or packing line.
How to validate a high-barrier paper coffee bag
Barrier paper validation begins with OTR and WVTR at stated test conditions, but it does not end with flat-sheet values. Converting, folds, seals, gussets, scoring, printing, coating continuity, pinholes, filling, abrasion, humidity, and distribution can change finished-package performance.
The approval plan may include coating and paper specifications, food-contact review, seal-window development, seal strength, leak testing, aroma and grease resistance, filled-bag drops and compression, humidity aging, roast-and-pack trials, headspace or gas measurements, storage studies, and real-time or appropriately designed shelf-life work with the actual coffee.
Use plastic-free, recyclable, and compostable as separate claims
The FTC Green Guides explain that a free-of claim can be misleading when the package contains more than trace or background levels of the named material, when the material was intentionally added, or when a substitute creates a similar concern. For a plastic-free paper bag, document the paper, heat-seal and barrier coatings, seam adhesive, inks, varnish, foil, UV effect, labels, closures, release liners, and manufacturing controls.
Plastic-free does not automatically mean recyclable, compostable, biodegradable, renewable, or environmentally preferable overall. Each claim needs separate evidence, a defined scope, and market-appropriate qualifications. Avoid broad “eco-friendly” language when the exact environmental benefit cannot be clearly stated and substantiated.
