Direct answer
Choose the format from the serving and filling system. A narrow stick format and a flat sachet both need a compatible form-fill-seal route; a multi-serve pouch adds a consumer opening and often reclosure. Compare actual powder volume, line access, seal cleanliness, print area and use after opening before requesting a single price per package.
Separate the serving decision from the film decision
A single-serve protein powder sample, a travel serving and a multi-serve retail pack can use the same formulation but ask different things of the package. First record net weight, bulk density, scoop or pour method, number of uses and expected opening sequence. A nominal weight does not determine the occupied volume after filling and settling.
P&M's [powder packaging page](/industries/powder-packaging) covers custom pouches, sachets and printed rollstock. Its [stick-pack and sachet page](/flexible-packaging/stick-packs-sachets) describes supported stick-format concepts through printed rollstock, subject to the filling route. This comparison does not promise P&M supplies filled product or a premade stick pack for every project.
Compare the three formats on the same buying questions
| Decision | Stick format | Flat sachet | Multi-serve pouch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consumer use | One narrow pourable serving; test tear and powder discharge | One serving with a wider opening; test emptying and handling | Repeated scoop or pour use; test first opening and reclosure |
| Filling route | Confirm stick-forming equipment, web width and registration | Confirm sachet-forming equipment and sealing geometry | Confirm premade-pouch or rollstock line, fill access and final seal |
| Artwork | Check required copy on a narrow printable panel | Check copy and code placement around seals | Check nutrition, code and graphics around zipper and gusset |
| Approval | Filled stick, seal and dispensing trial | Filled sachet, seal and tear trial | Filled pouch, scoop or pour, seal and repeated-use trial |
Use the matrix to make a shortlist. It is a specification worksheet, not a performance claim or a substitute for a line trial.
Make powder at the seal an explicit test condition
Fine powder can reach the heat-seal zone on any of the three routes. Give the packaging and filling teams the actual powder, dose, line speed range and cleaning method, then inspect seals on filled samples. A clean empty-film seal is not evidence that the production fill will seal the same way. For a multi-serve pack, test the zipper separately from the unopened top seal.
If a formula changes flavor, particle size or scoop, repeat the capacity and seal review rather than transferring the first SKU's approval by assumption. The existing [multi-serve scoop and zipper brief](/knowledge-center/protein-powder-pouch-scoop-zipper-fill-brief) covers that narrower opening decision in depth.
Send one comparable RFQ for each route
Include powder type, target dose or net fill, measured density if available, pack count, candidate dimensions, filling equipment, target storage, desired barrier, artwork count, quantities by SKU and destination. Ask each supplier to identify which tests and forming equipment its quote assumes. If the filling route is still open, request a feasibility review instead of treating stick, sachet and pouch unit prices as equivalent.
