Specify the opening task, not just a notch

A sheet-mask sachet and a small cosmetic sample can require different opening outcomes. State what the user needs to remove or dispense, where opening should start and how the package will be held. Identify the intended use conditions and any constraints that the responsible product team wants evaluated.

Keep this review focused on the first opening of a non-reclosable sachet. Refill transfer, resealing and formula compatibility have their own acceptance questions. If the user must reach for an unplanned tool or cannot access the contents as intended, record that observation rather than counting any torn package as success.

Connect the drawing to the finished sample

Use one controlled reference for the sachet dimensions, seals, intended opening feature, artwork directions and contents. Ask the supplier and filling partner to confirm how those elements correspond in the finished sample. Artwork approval and opening approval should refer to the same revision.

For example, a proposed opening direction may look clear on a flat drawing while a filled sample is held differently. Treat this as a question for observation, not a reason to move the notch by an arbitrary distance. Record the change requested and check the revised sample before carrying the approval forward.

Observe the complete opening sequence

The public abstract of ISO 17480:2015 addresses opening locations and methods, including instrumental and user-based evaluation for consumer packaging. The worksheet below is our suggested buyer record; it is not the ISO test procedure or a claim of certified accessibility.

Agree the participant or sample selection, conditioning and acceptance rules with the responsible evaluator. Identify whether an observation used an empty mockup, a filled sample or a conditioned finished pack. Do not treat those different sample states as equivalent.

Keep instrument readings and user observations connected

A numerical opening measurement can answer the question defined by its method and setup. User observations can show where the intended sequence breaks down. Ask the evaluator to explain how each will inform the decision; this guide does not supply a universal tear-force threshold.

Use specific findings: the user could not locate the notch, needed repeated attempts, followed an unintended path or could not remove the contents. Retain sample IDs and the conditions for those findings. “Easy open” is a useful design objective only when the approval record says what was actually evaluated.

Approve the revision and preserve other requirements

Record the drawing, artwork and sample versions approved, the evidence reviewed and any limitations. If the opening feature or construction changes, decide which checks need repeating. An opening improvement does not establish formula compatibility or package integrity; preserve the project’s separate requirements for both.

For a sheet-mask or cosmetic sachet project, send P&M the contents, format, size, quantity per SKU, proposed opening direction and evaluation requirements. Three-side-seal pouch options provide a format reference. Confirm technical suitability and sample responsibilities before production; do not assume a named evaluation method is an in-house P&M service.
