Define the observation before changing the structure
A household refill project may show a mass difference after warm storage or transport. Start with the exact unopened package: formula, fill mass, laminate revision, dimensions, spout, cap and closure conditions. Preserve the original measurements and dates instead of converting them immediately into a shelf-life claim.
Record whether each package was opened, sampled, wiped, relabeled or otherwise changed between measurements. Use the same identification and component boundary each time. A whole-pack record combines the product and packaging; it does not identify a particular lost ingredient.
Agree storage and weighing conditions
Have the responsible quality team define temperature, humidity where relevant, orientation, duration, sampling intervals and instrument checks. Retain individual values and the actual condition history. A nominal storage setting is not evidence that every sample experienced it continuously.
Use appropriate controls selected with the laboratory. Empty-package controls can help investigate packaging-related changes; a suitable reference system can help interpret the product and measurement setup. Neither automatically corrects every possible error. State the role and limits of each control.
| Observation | Evidence to add | Next question |
|---|---|---|
| Mass change with visible leakage | Leak location, closure record and handling history | Is there a package-integrity problem? |
| Mass change without visible leakage | Individual time series, controls and condition history | What loss routes or measurement effects remain plausible? |
| Different results between lots | Structure, fitment, fill and closure revisions | Were the samples actually comparable? |
| Unexpected control movement | Instrument checks and control condition records | Can the main sample change be interpreted reliably? |
Read the method scope before using its name
ASTM D2684/D2684M-24 addresses permeability of thermoplastic containers to packaged products under specified exposure conditions. Its scope requires containers designed for positive, leakproof closure. Under its Procedure B, the mass-change rate applies to the particular container tested.
Ask the laboratory whether the method is appropriate for the selected laminated flexible pouch, its closure and the actual formula. Do not assume that every refill pouch is within scope. A custom whole-pack storage observation should be described as such unless the applicable method has actually been followed.
Even a carefully collected mass record alone does not separate film-wall transport from loss at a closure or seal. Additional investigation is needed to identify the route and composition of a loss. Avoid diagnosing wall permeability simply because a leak is not visible.
Calculate the observed change, then stop at its boundary
Hypothetical arithmetic: an unopened package decreases from 525.0 g to 523.5 g during an agreed 30-day observation. The observed decrease is 1.5 g. Dividing by that interval gives an average of 0.05 g per day for this observation. These values are not PM data, an acceptance limit or evidence of a steady rate.
Do not multiply that average by a year and present it as validated annual loss. The record does not establish which ingredient left or whether the same rate continues under another temperature, orientation or duration. A controlled comparison of candidate packages must retain the same relevant conditions and define the acceptance decision in advance.
Send an evidence package for material review
For household refill packaging, provide the product category, relevant formula information through the agreed project process, fill and closure conditions, structure/fitment revisions, storage history and individual measurements. Include photographs and any leak investigation.
P&M evaluates household structures against product compatibility, volatility, light protection, required retention and distribution conditions. Higher barrier alone does not resolve an incompatible sealant or a leaking closure. Use the refill selection guide to organize the brief and keep cap-torque retention as a separate question where relevant. Exact suitability and acceptance require the project evidence.
General educational information only. Materials, performance, compliance, claims, quantities, and timing require confirmation for the exact packaging project.
