Kraft/NK is a simpler plastic-free paper pathway for applications whose required barrier can be met without a separate high-barrier layer. Kraft/VMNK/NK adds a higher-barrier paper layer for stronger oxygen, moisture, aroma, and light-management targets. Ordinary glassine and specified high-barrier paper are not interchangeable, and neither a material report nor an OTR or WVTR result by itself proves the finished coffee bag's shelf life.

Compare Kraft/NK and Kraft/VMNK/NK

In the simpler pathway, white or natural kraft—or a qualified tissue or glassine face—is combined with NK when the project's protection and heat-seal requirements can be met without an additional barrier layer. It can suit selected shorter-life, secondary, or less barrier-sensitive applications after validation.

The Kraft/VMNK/NK pathway adds VMNK when the coffee requires a higher barrier. The named layers are a development starting point, not permission to make a plastic-free or shelf-life claim before the exact coating, adhesive, ink, accessory, food-contact use, and target-market definition are confirmed.

Ordinary glassine is not high-barrier paper

Glassine can provide a smooth translucent paper face for selected lightweight products, inner wraps, or visual concepts. It should not be treated as a hermetic oxygen-and-moisture barrier merely because it is dense or grease resistant.

VMNK or another specified high-barrier paper route uses a controlled barrier system designed for different performance. Substituting ordinary glassine can change oxygen and moisture transmission, aroma retention, light protection, heat sealing, flex durability, and the achievable shelf-life program.

Define oxygen, moisture, aroma, and light requirements

Coffee protection is a system requirement. Oxygen can accelerate staling, moisture can change quality and handling, aroma compounds can escape or transfer, and light can matter for the selected product and structure. Seams, folds, pinholes, zipper, valve, and final top seal can reduce the performance suggested by a flat material sample.

Use target OTR and WVTR values only with the test method, temperature, humidity, sample orientation, conditioning, and material thickness. Compare like-for-like results and then test the converted bag under relevant storage conditions.

Whole bean and ground coffee need separate review

Whole bean and ground coffee differ in bulk density, exposed surface area, aroma behavior, dust, gas release, fill volume, and consumer opening patterns. Ground coffee may require closer review of powder in the seals and zipper, while freshly roasted beans can make valve and headspace decisions especially important.

The same net weight therefore does not automatically use the same dimensions, valve, seal window, or shelf-life plan. Confirm the actual coffee and roast-to-pack process, not only the label weight.

Heat sealing is part of the barrier system

A paper bag can only protect the product when the sealable surface, side or bottom seams, zipper ends, valve area, and final top seal form a reliable package under the filling process. Record seal temperature, dwell, pressure, jaw geometry, cooling, contamination, and the usable operating window.

Evaluate seal appearance and strength together with channel leaks, burst or creep where relevant, filled-bag handling, drops, and storage. Raising the temperature is not a universal fix because excessive heat can damage paper, coatings, print, or adjacent components.

Why material reports cannot promise shelf life

Material OTR and WVTR reports describe defined samples under defined test conditions. They do not include the converted seams, zipper, valve, final seal, filling variability, distribution damage, storage climate, coffee condition, or sensory acceptance limit.

Set a shelf-life target, identify the likely failure modes, approve the production-representative bag, and run a documented real-time or justified accelerated program with the intended coffee. Claims should be based on the finished product-package system rather than extrapolated from one material data sheet.
